Garden update winter

Chocolate sesame cake vegan and gf

Meet Johann his new favorite cake. The black sesame seeds give a warm and nutty flavour and this cake is airy and soft. You can find black sesame seed ( in Holland) at the Toko or Turkish supermarket and is great in savoury dishes as well. Another plus is the fact that you don’t taste the coconut cream, together with dates-the most used ingredient in vegan baking. Warm, nutty and chocolate galore.

almond date pie vegan and gf

Yes the version of Feasting on Fruit of this tart looks way prettier but my current oven is weird and simply aims to burn things. Luckily the taste was still amazing and the powdered sugar trick came once again to the rescue. And this almond date tart is simply delicious.

Tuinontwerp

Cake fails explained

here is a list of common mistakes when it comes to baking. Of course, as long as the cake tastes good, it does not really matter what it looks like. But below you can find our tips for how best to deal with collapsed or soggy cakes, caters, brittle crusts, strange colours, and the ultimate classic: “my cake won’t come out of the tin and I don’t want to eat it straight from the tin with a fork.”

Banana bread series walnut

It’s once again time for banana bread. Truly, how can a recipe be so easy, relaxing and delicious at the same time? I think we once again did well with this one. It’s still simple and definitely doable for all the “I can’t bake” people out there. It’s the perfect bread to share with friends or family, or to enjoy for a few days by yourself.

Wild flowers

Start a garden

Our dream was to have a small farm with lots of land and lots of peace and quiet. While this didn’t work out exactly, with only 500 m2 for a garden, having a forest in front of the house and behind it isn’t bad either. Our next dream was to have our own vegetable plot to grow our own food, because organically homegrown vegetables just taste better! We also have a basement where we can keep many, many preserve jars filled with pickled vegetables, and we are able to share our harvest with others, so more people can enjoy how great homegrown food is…

When we first shared a recipe for our banana bread series (click here for recipe 1 and here for recipe 2) someone on Instagram told us that her favourite recipe came from our cook book “Andere Koek”. And honestly, I do think that’s one of our best recipes. The workshop cake, breakfast cake and waffles are other great classics, but this one is actually really good! Vegan and gluten free…

Rhubarb lemon cake

A few days ago, we had our first couple of warm days of the year (not a fan, and not happy). We ate our first asparagus and turnips, and now the time has come for rhubarb. A while ago we made a rhubarb compote to go with this wonderful cheesecake, and now we have created a lovely lemon rhubarb cake.

This cake tastes wonderfully fresh and a little sour, but I think that’s what makes rhubarb actually taste like rhubarb.

In our search for the best banana bread, we have tried quite a few different cakes already. And I have to admit that although banana bread is incredibly easy to make –you only have to mix some flour and bananas in a bowl and bam! you’re done – not every recipe is as good. I tend to look for recipes that aren’t too sweet, have some texture, and aren’t too dry. It can be fancy, and I like the idea that you can add your own toppings as well. On our third try, we struck gold:

Banana bread series

A new series: the banana bread series. Everyone, even the people who say they really can’t bake or that cooking is just a hassle, can make banana bread. It is suitable – or can be made to fit – any person’s diet, no matter your allergies or intolerances. Okay, except if you’re allergic for bananas. All you need to do is grab a bowl and a spoon, get rid of some of that built up tension as you mash your bananas, and tadaaaa! A cake!
